Reggie Yates is a familiar name in showbiz.

The broadcaster, actor and presenter has been a regular on British TV screens, but he has now written and directed a new film for the big screen.

In an interview on ITV’sGood Morning Britain, Yates said: “Yeah, so it’s a coming of age story fuelled by joy more than anything, and I think we’ve had more than our fair share of trauma filled issue-based movies.”

Interviewer Adil Ray drew criticism for claiming the movie helps break down stereotypes.

He said: “I love the fact that you literally, you’re breaking down the stereotypes, haven’t you? We, you know, we think of a movie about black kids and it’s sort of gangs and it’s gangsters and it’s, you know, drugs and all of that.”

Reggie is known for his work on children’s TV channel CBBC on shows like Get 100 and Only In America With Fearne Cotton, as well as starring as Carl Fenton in Grange Hill.

He was also known as the character Leo Jones, brother of Martha Jones on the BBC’sDoctor Who. Martha was the second long-term companion of the David Tennant edition of the doctor and was played by Freema Agyeman.

Reggie Yates was born in London in on May 31, 1983.

Celebrity Net Worth reports the 38-year-old’s fortune to be around £2.2 million.

In a career that began as a child actor, Yates is now an award-winning director. His 2014, his short film Date Night starring Daniel Kaluuya won the best Short Film UK Feature at the London Independent Film Festival.

He has gone on to write and direct a number of other films.

Yates has also won awards for presenting documentaries. Reggie Yates’ Extreme Russia won multiple awards at the Broadcast Awards in 2016.

He is good friends with and has often presented alongside Fearne Cotton, as well as shows on BBC Radio 1.

Yates will release his debut feature film with the upcoming ‘Pirates’. On his official bio, the film is explained as a “coming-of-age comedy is a love letter to the UK Garage scene and a time capsule for 90’s London.”

The comedy follows three young pirate radio DJ’s from London and stars Elliot Edusah, Jordan Peters and Reda Elzaouar.

Their characters, Cappor, Two Tonne and Kidda do their best to try and get into that evening’s New Year’s Eve party at a certain club, which they believe will be one of the best nights of their lives.

Pirates will be released in cinemas on November 26.

Yates said he wanted to make a film that was about garage music as it is not something he had seen in film.

He told The Guardian : “I’d never seen garage music in anything connected to film before.”

“It breaks my heart that it’s just not been celebrated in the way that ska has been, or grime, or punk.”
