Deadline broke the news of the casting, reporting: “Cattrall will play the future version of Hilary Duff’s character Sophie, who is telling her son the story of how she met his father, much like Josh Radnor (and Bob Saget’s) Ted Mosby did in the original series.”

The report continued: “Sophie’s story will transport audiences back to the year 2021 where she and her close-knit group of friends – Jesse (Chris Lowell), Valentina (Francia Raisa), Charlie (Tom Ainsley), Ellen (Tien Tran), and Sid (Suraj Sharma) – are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.”

How I Met Your Father has been in development since How I Met Your Mother ended in 2014 – and finally started moving forward this year.

Hilary previously explained her excitement to be involved in the show.

She said: “I’ve been incredibly lucky in my career to play some wonderful characters and I’m looking forward to taking on the role of Sophie.

“As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby.”
