Having unprotected penetrative sex during your or your partner’s period does not mean it can ‘block off’ any potential infections. In fact, you’re more likely to get or transmit STI during menstruation.
This is because during period, the cervix opens slightly to allow blood to pass through. Thus, one can get (or transmit – because the virus may be present in menstrual blood too) STI as any bodily fluid potentially containing HIV or other STIs can easily pass through the body. The only way to prevent unwanted infections is by using a condom.
