Alice Evans has revealed the heartbreaking moment she realised something was ‘very wrong’ in her marriage to Ioan Gruffudd.

Taking part in her first TV interview since the Welsh actor filed for divorce in March after 14 years of marriage, the 53-year-old actress sobbed as she spoke to Lorraine about separating from Ioan.

Appearing on Thursday’s edition of the ITV show, Alice said she knew the moment something was wrong in her marriage when Ioan returned to the family home in Los Angeles after filming his new show Harrow in Australia.

“He came back, hugged the kids, he very dryly gave me a kiss on the cheek and that was when I knew something was wrong,” Alice explained.

“He told me within the first few days I don’t love you anymore,” she said, admitting Ioan’s announcement was “just so out of the blue”.

Their relationship drastically deteriorated as they tried to work on their marriage, but the Hornblower star even refused to share a bed with his wife.

“Over four months he said ‘I don’t love you anymore, I might leave you or I might not leave you’,” Alice tearfully shared, noting that she’d been on her own with the couple’s two children, Ella and Elsie, during the pandemic while he was away filming.

“He wouldn’t talk to me, look at me, went to sleep in the same room. I thought I might do myself harm,” she confessed.

“I spoke to my friends and they said this is not like him. At one point I said I’m going to lose my mind,” Alice said.

The actress, who first started dating Ioan in 2000 when they met on the set of 102 Dalmatians, said she was “smug married” and refused to believe her relationship with her husband was coming to an end.

“We’d been together 20 years. I was one of those very complacent – what’s the Bridget Jones phrase? Smug married. I thought it was never going to happen to me,” she said.

Alice said she has no contact with Ioan except through their lawyers, and alleged he rarely speaks to his daughters on FaceTime.

Last month, the Welsh actor went public with new girlfriend Bianca Wallace, on social media, prompting Alice to claim Ioan had been having a relationship with the 29-year-old actress for three years.
